Don’t Make Me Think by Steve Krug, Chapters 5 and 6 discussion

Chapter 5

In Chapter 5 of Don’t Make Me Think Steve Krug talks about how websites need the simplest amount of text possible. When sites have a little too much text people get frustrated and feel like they have to read through it all because they think if it’s there it has to be important. And when there is way too much text on a website people just simply leave. So here is an example of a site that has too much text and then an edited version of what I think the site needs.

This site is very complicated not only because of all the unneccesary text but just the chaos of all the text choices, the imagery throughout the site, the layout, and the color choices. However, for now let’s focus on simplifying the text. The home page has such a great amount of text that you have to scroll down and down some more to try to get through it. Because there is so much to look at right on the home page people will automatically be frustrated. Most of this text can be put in the other pages of the site. All that is needed on the home page is simply the info explaining what Riverside Art Center is. To get to all the other info that was originally on the home page can be simply found by clicking on a tab.

Chapter 6

Navigation is the focus of chapter 6. Good navigation means simply navigation that you do not have to think twice about. For example tabs are usually on the left-hand side of a site or on the top of the site and if a website went a different route than these 2 options the viewer would be very confused.

A website with good navigation is Amazon’s site. Click here to visit Amazon. There is a button that says shop by department which leads to several tabs that lead into more tabs with descriptions and this is done in the most organized way. If done any other way it would have been quite complicated to find what you are looking for. For this to be done there had to be a lot of organizing of products to be split into the different tabs. Also, the home page is easy to go back to at any point as the amazon logo is the button to go to the home page. There is also a title on each page you go to, for example there is the title “Movies & Tv” on the Movies and Tv page. As for the search bar it is very easy to use as you have the option to search something throughout all departments or you can pick a department to search from. Overall the navigation is very user-friendly.
